How do I edit video with my own Claude Code or Codex?
You can edit video with your own Claude Code or Codex in three ways. Ask it to script ffmpeg, connect it to an editor through a plugin, or use an editor built around your agent. octuedit, an AI video editor for Mac, is the third kind: your agent cuts on a real timeline you can change by hand, for $99 once, plus the plan you already pay for.

What can Claude Code or Codex do with video?
On their own, Claude Code and Codex work with files and commands. They can transcribe a recording, write a cut list and run ffmpeg to trim, join and convert media. What they lack is a timeline, so every change means another command and another render, and nothing shows you the cut before you watch the whole file.
That gap is why editors built around an agent exist. octuedit is an AI video editor for Mac, and we make it. Your own Claude Code or Codex does the editing, and the result lands on a normal multi-track timeline that you can change by hand. The app costs $99 once. The AI runs on the plan you already pay for, which Anthropic or OpenAI bills separately.
Which way of editing with an agent fits you?
There are three routes. Pick by how much you want to build and how much you want to see.
- Script ffmpeg yourself. Free beyond your plan, flexible, and good for batch jobs. You get no timeline.
- Connect an editor through a plugin. Several editors let an outside agent drive them, so you keep a visual timeline. Each has its own plan and billing, so check what you pay twice.
- Use an editor built around your agent. octuedit works this way. Footage and transcription stay on your Mac, and there are no AI credits to buy from us.
The guide to video editors that work with Claude Code and Codex compares the options side by side, with prices from each company's own pages.
What do I need to start?
You need a Mac on macOS 13 or later (Apple silicon or Intel), octuedit, and a paid Claude Code or Codex plan. Editing by request needs an internet connection for the agent. Transcription, playback and export run on your Mac. Details on what leaves your Mac are on the local editing page.
Which guides cover my situation?
Each guide answers one situation, with the exact steps and the honest limits.
- Cut weekly talking videos with Claude, on your Mac: a weekly routine for pauses, filler, retakes and captions.
More guides will appear here as they are published. If your situation is not covered, the editing control page shows how the agent's work stays editable.
Questions
Can Claude Code edit video?
Claude Code can run ffmpeg and read transcripts, but it has no timeline of its own. In an editor built around it, such as octuedit, it cuts on a real timeline you can change by hand, and undo covers its edits.
Do I need both Claude Code and Codex?
No. One of them is enough. The chat inside octuedit runs on Claude Code, and Codex edits the same project through Terminal. octuedit does not sell AI credits, so the editing cost stays on your plan.
Does editing with an agent cost extra?
The app is $99 once. The agent is billed by Anthropic or OpenAI under your own plan, so that part is an ongoing cost. If you already pay for Claude or Codex, the extra cost is the app.
